COPPER CANYON RAILWAY

The Copper Canyon railway is a stunning piece of engineering achievement. This railroad marvel took almost 90 years and 90 million dollars to complete. Opened after decades of construction in 1961, the railway was designed to connect the Pacific Ocean with Mexico’s central desert territory and Chihuahua. During construction the railroad has taken continual steps to reduce the risk of rockslides, including adding chain netting and cement withholding barriers at-steep hillsides along the way.

Ferrocaril Mexicano, exclusive owners of the Chihuahua-Pacifico Railway, operates the Copper Canyon railroad cars. Sightseeing tours by rail car through Copper Canyon is unlike any other train journey anywhere else in the world. There are 25,000 square miles of canyons in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. Copper Canyon private railroad cars travel through an impressive 86 tunnels and over 37 bridges en route, as the train winds its way from sea level to an elevation of nearly 8,000 feet.
