EU Delays ETIAS Travel Authorization until 2027
The European Union has officially delayed the rollout of its ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) until 2027.
The official European Union ETIAS website currently states that the system is not yet operational and that travelers should not apply at this time. The EU has said it will provide plenty of advance notice before ETIAS officially launches.
Why Was It Delayed?
The primary reason appears to be delays with Europe's new Entry/Exit System (EES) - the electronic border system that will replace passport stamping.
EES records travelers' passport information, facial image, fingerprints, and entry/exit dates electronically. It's a massive technology project involving dozens of countries, airports, ferry terminals, and land border crossings.
The rollout has taken much longer than expected due to technical and operational challenges. Rather than launching ETIAS before EES is fully stable, the EU has decided to delay ETIAS until the border system is ready.
